Off Topic: 31 Day Reset – Day 1

I am a huge, huge fan of Rosetta Thurman. I forget how I came across her blog many moons ago, but I loved how she wrote to young professionals and nonprofiteers. Right up my alley! I was hooked. Since then, I have utilized her other blogs and many resources.

This month, I am participating in the #31dayreset that is happening on her Happy Black Woman blog. I love doing personal reflection and working to improve myself, and what better way to do it than with the encouragement of peers?

Day #1: Start Here
1. Choose your Reset Notebook
The notebook I chose is one I bought for myself a few months ago, but hadn’t yet decided how I wanted to use it. I really like the sayings on it:

(front)
It’s like a wish. Or a dream.
But I write it down anyway.
It lives in my heart.

(back)
It is here where she must
begin to tell her story.

You can buy it, or find similar ones, here.

2. Choose your Personal Mantra
“Be the change you wish to see in the world.” – Ghandi

I had a hard time choosing just one mantra to use during this #31dayreset. I debated between a few, but ultimately decided on this one. During college, I joked (well, half-joked) with people that my career plans were to “save the world.” I had no idea how I was going to do it, but I wanted to find a way! This quote reminds me of my hopeless dreams of someday enriching the poor, sheltering the homeless, obtaining justice for the violated, feeding the hungry, ending the wars, and essentially, saving the world. I want to change myself to be a better person, so that the world can become a better place.

3. Choose a Theme Song
“Boy” by Our Lady Peace

Our Lady Peace is one of my all-time favorite bands. They are a Canadian rock band who are not very well-known here in America. I first heard their music back in 1997 when their song “Clumsy” was included on the I Know What You Did Last Summer soundtrack. I started exploring their other songs and the lyrics just seemed to “speak” to me.

I’m trying to figure out a way to imbed the mp3 so you can listen to the song, but in the meantime you can read the lyrics below. I think they are fitting for this reset, don’t you?

It’s time for forgiveness
It’s time for relief
It’s time that we’ve wasted
It’s time that we need
It’s time for decision
It’s time to be brave
It’s the time of your life
Don’t let it slip away

Boy, you’ve been running but can’t get anywhere
Don’t carry the weight of the world, boy

It’s time that we borrow
It’s time that we bleed
It’s time that will cure us
You’ve just gotta believe
There’s a warning up ahead
The alarms gone off again
But the sun will fill the sky
Fill the sky

Boy, you’ve been running but can’t get anywhere
Don’t carry the weight of the world
And boy, help is coming, I’ll get you out of here
Don’t carry the weight of the world
The weight of the world, the weight of the world

Just when you think you’re done
War can never be won
I’ll be there to pick you up and dust you off and bring you home
And make you feel love

Don’t carry the weight of the world
Boy, you’ve been running but can’t get anywhere
Don’t carry the weight of the world
And boy, help is coming, I’ll get you out of here
Don’t carry the weight of the world
The weight of the world, the weight of the world
The weight of the world, the weight of the world

Tonight is a fireball
Tonight are you not alone
Tonight we start again
Tonight the best is yet to come
